May 1978: Form house band in Vancouver’s Gastown. Play local club scene for 18 months. January 1980: Release debut album ‘Uncut’. Tour Canada and U.S. on strength of four top ten records. February 1981: ‘Uncut‘ is certified double platinum [200,000] copies. Band wins ‘Best New Group’ at Juno Awards. June 1981: Release of second album, ‘Thirsty Ears’. It ships platinum and first single reaches top 5 nationally. Touring continues at a pace of over 300 shows per year. May 1982: Work on third album, ‘Party Line’ begins. First single gets heavy national airplay. Band plays 65 U.S. dates to promote. April 1983: European tour garners spectacular reviews at prestigious Montreux Jazz Festival in Switzerland and North Sea Jazz Festival in Holland. Record ‘Live at Montreux’. September 1983: ‘Red Hot/ True Blue’, release number four, a double album with 18 tunes, cut live in the studio, is issued on RCA records in Canada. September 1984: Fifth album ‘Live At Montreux’ is released to critical acclaim. December 1984: CBC airs on hour national TV special, ‘Powder Blues Live at Montreux’. Band plays 112 dates. 1985: Band performs 175 dates in U.S. and Canada. November 1986: The coveted W.C. Handy Award for blues is presented to the Powder Blues in Memphis, Tennessee for ‘Best Foreign Band’. July 1988: Ten year Anniversary sees the band touring at a pace of over 100 dates per year. August 1990: ‘First Decade/Greatest Hits, album number six, is released featuring 19 cuts; over 68 minutes of Powder Blues, available for the first time ever on CD. November 1990: Band performs 12 concerts in the Soviet Union and releases product on Melody Records. April 1991: Touring continues and band begins work on a new studio album. April 1993: ‘Let’s Get Loose’ the seventh album by the band, containing 12 new studio cuts, is released on WEA records. Band tours nationally to support release and airplay. 1994-1996: Band continues to tour playing an average of 50 shows a year including major blues and jazz festivals in Vancouver, Victoria, Calgary, Edmonton, Saskatoon, Regina, Winnipeg, Toronto, Ottawa, Montreal and Quebec City. 1997: ‘Live at Montreux’ is restored to it’s original concert length, re-mastered digitally and released worldwide on Peerless. Powder Blues ‘First Decade/Greatest Hits’ on WEA achieves ‘gold record’ status. 1998: Powder Blues play over 60 live shows from the Atlantic to the Pacific. 1999: Work begins on the writing and arranging of ‘Swing Shift’, the new album project and the band continues to tour as the Blue Wave just keeps on rolling. |
